Iwas trying not to lose my fucking mind. I felt like a child again riding on her back. The only time I got a respite from reading the torture journals my father thrust at me when I was too young was when my mother told me stories at night.

My favorite was the one about the serpent and the knight and I couldn’t help being excited to see the serpent in front of me when I realized that was what she was becoming. I couldn’t tell at first and all I could feel was the pain she was experiencing trying to shift.

I could hear bones snapping and knew it was hurting her because my body ached like I’d just finished a long session training with a sword when I was old enough. I couldn’t fully enjoy what I was seeing until I felt something come from her that the light must have healed her again and she was at full power again.

I was in front of everyone grasping on to her neck and Esylle was behind me gripping my waist so hard I was having trouble breathing. I wanted to call back to her to ask if she was okay back there, but Lisana was flying hard and fast and the wind over the sea was so strong, I doubted she would hear me.

I’d never been to Idric Island before and had no reason to go. I would have eventually made the trip if I’d taken over from my father to see if there was anything I wanted to begin trade with and arrange to have rocks shipped to make weapons with. I didn’t know what it was like, nor how I would know we were getting close.

We flew over several small islands in the sea, but she never went down to them. I finally spotted a massive island in the distance and wondered if that was Idric. As we got closer, I was sure it was. It was elevated high above the sea and appeared to made of stone. She seemed to be looking directly at and flying towards it.

She flapped her wings higher and soared above what I was sure now was Idric. I was no longer afraid to look down and could make out roads and huts. She seemed to know where she was going, but stayed high when she was above the houses. She only started to descend when we came upon a large clearing. I could see that was where the army was camped and there were several tents set up.

She moved towards a large tent and I knew that was where Autar and the other generals would be. I expected another shriek from her to announce our presence, but what she did surprised me and could have put everyone on her back in danger.

There were men outside tents diving for cover when they saw us. She made a sharp dive and finally let out the shriek I heard before when she swooped low enough to pull the tent cover off with her claw and fly off with it.
